This year, a group of seven students and two FDR teachers reunited to help build a library in a small town outside the city of Huaraz called Yurac Yacu. This project began two years ago when our school librarian contacted the owner of a hotel in Yurac Yacu who over the past few years has been building this library for the community in a school next to her hotel. The idea of having a community library began when she noticed that many of the mothers in the neighbor school where illiterate or others spoke only Quechua, an old language spoken in Peru. She realized then that as the years pass by this problem will only grow bigger and bigger because their children learn a different language than they do so, by having a library they will finally have access to a better education for the children and even the parents.
Our job in this library build was to take books to this school and make the teachers learn the way this library works. Last year (2012), another group of students took Mac computers from our school library that we no longer use and this way we could catalogue the books and make an inventory of all the books they have. We re-arranged the school supplies and provide them with more and newer ones.
Our trip to Huaraz lasted four days and one of those was specially to spend time with the children in the school and some students from the schools that were close to it. We arranged different activities like arts and crafts, reading out loud, and outdoor games.
The experience was unforgettable and extremely rewarding after seeing the great results of the library, the classroom rearrangements, and of course, the smiles of the student and teachers who were happy and very grateful for the changes made.
