Today was our visit to the nuclear power plant in Lima and it was awesome! I went with Paolo and Stephano and had a great time visiting the different areas of the reactor. To be honest, I wasn't so excited at first because I'm not so interested in these kinds of things. But, when I left I knew I had definitely been wrong. Nuclear energy is not what I'm interested in the most, but it was interesting learning about this and getting to visit the nuclear reactor to actually learn this way. When someone says "nuclear plant"... What do you instantly think? Bombs!!! Explosion!!! That's what most people think of when hearing those words, but we shouldn't because there is more to it than that. This reactor has many functions like creating a special medicine for cancer patients with bone cancer. In comparison to morphine which is also given to cancer patients, these "radioisotopes" are not addictive, plus, treats the pain from the cancer for a longer time period. These medicines are then taken to different hospitals like "Clínica de Enfermedades Neoplásticas" in San Borja, which is part of IPEN like the nuclear reactor. Overall, the day was very interesting and the time was used wisely to get the most information we could for The Break and Story Time! |
