For four weeks the Innovation Academy students have been taking classes in the UPC. Two weeks were about marketing and two about finance. Having this experience of taking classes in an actual university was very interesting because we were taking classes in a different environment. The marketing classes I think were very useful because we learned more about another side of marketing that we hadn't learned yet at school and gave us a wider view of what marketing was and how it was used in different companies. We had examples about Cirque du Soleil and other companies such as Skype, Google, Apple, etc. During our first class, we got to analyze some of these companies and state their customer segment, value proposition, etc. This was interesting because some of us have known these companies for a long time, but we never really took the chance to analyze them this way. | |
There was a downside of these classes, however. The ordinary way to learn (especially here in Lima), is to have a teacher in front of the class and talk to you, mostly the entire lesson. Sometimes, most of the things the teacher was telling me I simply didn't listen to because I was getting tired of listening the same voice for the whole three hours we had class that day. With this I definitely realized the reason I didn't understand some things at school like my math class, because I just had to do to fully understand. For example, when we did the marketing exercise of analyzing different companies, it was then when I understood terms such as market segment and others in the Canvas Business Model.
