Last class we watched The Great Gatsby after reading the book by F. Scott Fitzgerald and as we began our film unit, these are some of things I was conscious about while watching the film by Baz Luhrmann.
Film Analysis: - Structure (e.g. Avatar, Momento, The Butterfly Effect) - Selection of Character - Camera angles (e.g. low shot, high angle, birds eye view, etc) - Dialogue - Acting - Theme - Color palette - Plot - Props and costumes - Set up - Setting and background, Music – how does it fit with the mood and the scene? | How are films, novels, and short stories alike? |
Mise-en-scene: Anything that appears in the scene
Expression used to describe the design aspects of a film production.
Translation: “visual theme” or “telling a story” – both in visually artful ways through storyboarding, cinematography, and stage.

As I watched the movie I realized that there are many effects that make the movie what it is. It's like it gives it's own personality to the movie and helps transmit the message that is intended to.
“Even if you don’t intend something to have an effect, it does.”
The POWER of effects
The setting of the movie and the props and the scenery, everything had a purpose as I watched this film.
Behind a character there is always something that means something to the audience and gives a relevant message about what the movie is trying to convey.

Setting and Background Notes: - Low light at the beginning - In the first scene when Daisy appears, everything is very light and white but what does it mean? - Gatsby’s party – fireworks, big elegant dresses, drinks Structure: Scenes go back and forth from past to present (Nick's memory) | Music technique: - Director uses same song to remind the audience of something that happened earlier in the movie. Symbolism: - The shooting star - Gatsby wishes to be like that shooting star and rise. - The eyes watching |
Symbolism
The eyes in the movie represent that everyone is watching
They can try to hide the affairs & the murder ,but in reality everyone knows about it.

West Egg | The Valley of Ashes | East Egg |
The difference in setting in the movie. We can difference these by the way people dress, the cars they use, their homes, decoration, what they consume, etc.
-Notes-
Nick Carraway comes from the poor mid-west, which represents his poor, unselfish personality. - When nick gets drunk for the second time, the looks out the window and realizes that wealth and richness is not the only life there is to make you happy. | Daisy is a shallow woman: "I’m sad because I’ve never seen so much beautiful shirts." - This shows how materialistic Daisy is. - Daisy talks about her daughter: "I hope she'll be a fool--that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool..." |
